What is a day !
How do we define a day, is it -
-The time it takes for Earth to complete one rotation on its axis or
-The time from one noon to the other !
Actually both are different and both are defined as a day
Sidereal day: The time a celestial body takes to complete one rotation on its axis. For Earth, Sidereal day is 23 hours, 56 minutes & 4.1 seconds.
Solar day: From one noon (when the Sun is exactly overhead) to the next noon is a Solar day.
In the picture, point A will complete one rotation on its axis in 23 hours and 56 mins, however by that time Earth would have moved from point X to point Y on its orbit around the Sun and will take another 4 minutes to have completed one rotation around the Sun (and is noon again).
Because of this additional 4 mins, a Solar day is longer than a Sidereal day.
