If you are in the market
checking out new models of cars and notice
the spare wheel missing from the trunk,
don't be surprised. It is not a manufacturing oversight. Armed with a five-year-old govt order, auto makers are slowly removing the spare wheel from several models, doing
away with the slimmer stepney that came with cars over the past few years.
In July 2020, ministry of road transport and highways amended Central Motor Vehicles Rules to permit MI category vehicles that are up to 3.5 tonne and can carry up to nine passengers, and some light commercial
vehicles, to skip the spare wheel. The
exemption, however, applies only if the
vehicle is fitted with tubeless tyres, a TPMS and comes with a tyre repair kit.
