Given the size of the population in India, it is only possible for the elite schools to spend time and money on teaching life skills. Life skills include factors like making the child aware of potentially dangerous situations, helping her build self-confidence and teaching her to manage her time and improve her communication skills. Teaching children life skills in order to build confidence and st
rengthen independence is an important stage of childhood development. Although some are eager to reach this level of understanding, others wish these types of lessons and responsibilities would be left for later in life. Gauge your child's readiness for life skills education based on questions she asks, what her peers are talking to her about, and what she's learning in school.
1. About Developing Hygiene Habits
Developing good hygiene habits can start as early as when a child can independently hold a hairbrush and start brushing her teeth. Teach a child the importance of good health through routine hygiene such as washing her hands before each meal, washing her hands following using the bathroom, brushing her teeth for at least two minutes three times per day, washing her face every morning, and taking baths. Set up a routine for each hygiene task in order to help develop healthy habits.
2. About Money Management
Most children have no idea where money comes from, much less how to develop money management skills. It's common for children to pick up whatever spending or money management habits their parents have, so be aware of how things are handled in the household. We help children to understand the difference between a need and a want. Further we enhance these teachings by encouraging children to earn money for the things they want, and by opening savings accounts in a dramatically way. This is also a good opportunity for teaching why math matters, and how it relates to money management.
3. About Time Management
Developing time management skills can touch just about every part of your child's life. It helps him understand the importance of being prompt and on time for appointments, school, classes, after-school activities and after-school jobs, and helps him manage how much time he has for homework, social time and chores. This life skill will prove beneficial as he ages in terms of developing dependability skills and reliability.
4. About Stress Management
Everyone experiences stress, and there are good ways and bad ways of handling this reality. Healthy stress management includes being patient, thinking about things objectively, and finding solutions, relaxing and taking time to one's self. Bad stress management includes temper tantrums, being destructive, being impatient, lashing out at people and avoiding responsibilities. We believe teaching children good stress management right from the start proves beneficial in social situations, school situations and part-time work situations.
5. About Strengthening Values
Does your child know how to make good decisions? Although the urge to hold her hand and guide her through every situation may sometimes prevail, this isn't realistic. Engaging in role-playing situations in which children have to make good or bad decisions about lying, stealing, cheating, or experimenting with substances are few best ways done in our class.
6. About Protecting Themselves
Sometimes, children want to take candy from strangers, engage in conversations with strangers and go off to play on the playground with strangers. It's part of their nature to be a little too trusting and friendly, which could potentially lead to dangerous situations. We talking about these situations could easily scare children, but it's possible to make learning this life skill fun. We teach your children that yelling and screaming when someone tries to take them is the best thing to do, and then role-play the situation with them. We allow your children to experiment with other protective measures such as running, struggling to get away, and stomping on feet. That way, they know exactly what to do if anything happens.
7. About Handling Emergencies
This is another life skill that is scary for some children to learn, but it can't be avoided. Hold fire drills regularly in your home, and set up a fire escape plan. Ensure everyone in the family knows exactly what to do if there is a fire. Other emergencies include knowing how to dial 108 or medical assistance number if someone gets hurt, or if an intruder is trying to break into your home. Some children instinctively know what to do when emergencies arise; others shut down in fear. It's easy to figure out how your child will react by role-playing the situation with the entire family.

By learning new skills we increase our understanding of the world around us and equip ourselves with the tools we need to live a more productive and fulfilling life, finding ways to cope with the challenges that life, inevitably, throws at us.
Life skills are not always taught directly but often learned indirectly through experience and practice.
