We often imagine transformation as a process of uncovering truth, as though the right explanation might finally set us free. Beneath much of modern psychology lies the promise that if we can understand ourselves clearly enough, we will eventually transcend our suffering. Yet the possibility remains that some wounds are not seeking answers but companionship.
This piece explores why insight, for all its value, is often insufficient on its own, and why certain parts of us seem to change only when they are encountered, recognised, and carried within a relationship. There are burdens that understanding can name, but only connection can lighten.

A psychology degree comes with many unexpected skills. Chief among them: the ability to accidentally psychoanalyse an entire family before dessert.
For students caught between understanding people and understanding themselves, between learning psychology and becoming a therapist, this piece may feel uncomfortably familiar. The Edge Undergraduate Fellowship Programme was built for this strange and important in-between.

Therapy is often imagined as a process of finding answers. Yet some of its most transformative moments have very little to do with answers at all. They happen when a person brings forward a grief they've never spoken aloud, an anger they fear will drive people away, or a shame they have spent years hiding. Beneath the words is often an unspoken question: "Will you still be here once you know this about me?"
The therapist's response isn't always verbal. Sometimes it is conveyed through presence itself, through staying engaged and through demonstrating, moment by moment, that intimacy does not have to collapse under the weight of truth. For many of us, this experience isn't just comforting, it's also corrective.
