Surprisingly, glass bottles may release more microplastics into drinks than plastic ones.

A recent French study analyzing beverages such as soda, beer, iced tea, and lemonade found up to 100 microplastic particles per liter in glass bottles—5 to 50 times higher than levels in plastic or metal containers.

Researchers originally expected plastic bottles to be the main offenders. Instead, the hidden culprit was the plastic-lined caps used to seal glass bottles. Tiny scratches and abrasions—caused by handling, transportation, or simply opening the bottles—were found to release plastic particles directly into the liquid.

Not all drinks were equally affected. Water, whether still or sparkling, showed much lower contamination—around 1.6 particles/L in plastic bottles and 4.5 in glass. Wine also had low levels, though the reason remains unclear. The highest microplastic counts appeared in soft drinks, lemonade, and beer, suggesting that carbonation or acidity may play a role in releasing particles.

The study also highlighted a potential solution: simply cleaning bottle caps with air and alcohol before sealing reduced microplastic contamination by 60%. For manufacturers, this could be an easy but powerful step toward making beverages safer.

While the findings may surprise consumers who view glass as the “cleaner” option, they underscore how even small design details—like a bottle cap—can have a major impact on what we drink.

By the end of 2025, a new FDA-approved eye drop called VIZZ could change how we treat presbyopia—the age-related loss of near vision that affects billions worldwide. Developed by Lenz Therapeutics, VIZZ uses aceclidine to create a ‘pinhole effect,’ narrowing the pupil to sharpen near vision without harming distance vision. In three large Phase 3 trials (CLARITY 1, 2, and 3), patients reported clearer near vision within 30 minutes, with effects lasting up to 10 hours. Over 30,000 treatment days showed no serious side effects. U.S. samples will start in October 2025, with nationwide availability expected by late Q4 2025.
