Aung San Suu Kyi Transferred to House Arrest from Detention, Junta Announces, Prompting US to Renew Calls for Her Release

Detained former Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been shifted to house arrest, according to state media reports. The move comes five years after she was first detained following the 2021 military coup.

On May 1, the United States called for her immediate release after the junta announced the change in her detention status. The 80-year-old Nobel laureate had been held in custody—reportedly in a military prison in the capital, Nay Pyi Taw—since being removed from office.

A statement from military leader Min Aung Hlaing, who led the coup, said her remaining sentence had been commuted to be served at a designated residence.

Suu Kyi rose to power in 2015 after Myanmar’s military rulers introduced democratic reforms. Prior to that, she spent decades as a pro-democracy activist and had already endured more than 15 years under house arrest during earlier periods of military rule.
