According to various news reports, as of 18th May 2026, an estimated 20 individuals remain held hostage amid escalating tensions in Manipur. The standoff began on May 13 following the ambush and killing of three church leaders in the Kangpokpi district.
The breakdown of the remaining captives is disputed by community leaders on both sides:
Kuki Hostages: Kuki-Zo organizations report that 14 members of their community (including three students) remain in captivity.
Naga Hostages: Naga apex bodies report that 6 Naga community members remain untraced and are believed to be held by Kuki groups.
While an initial group of 28 hostages (14 from each community) was safely released on May 15 following negotiations by security forces and civil leaders, the situation remains tense. Apex Naga body: United Naga Council (UNC) have launched an inter-district blockade on the highways in the Naga areas in Manipur with immediate effect demanding safe recovery.
While the The Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) have extended the shutdown by another 48 hrs on Sunday. The state government and security forces are continuing search and rescue operations.
