नवरात्रि के प्रथम दिन आश्विन शुक्ल प्रतिपदा को घटस्थापना के साथ ही दुर्गा के प्रथम स्वरूप मां शैलपुत्री की उपासना की जाती है। मां दुर्गा अपने पहले स्वरूप में शैलपुत्री के नाम से पूजी जाती हैं। पर्वतराज हिमालय की पुत्री होने के कारण इनका नाम शैलपुत्री पड़ा।
