Sea Pen (Pennatulacea) – NEET Biology Concept | Ambition Institute
Sea pens are fascinating colonial marine organisms belonging to phylum Cnidaria and class Anthozoa. They resemble an old quill pen and live anchored in soft ocean sediments like sand or mud. The body has a central stalk (rachis) and a basal peduncle that fixes the colony in the substrate. A sea pen colony contains different types of polyps, including feeding polyps and siphonozooids that help in water circulation.
Many sea pens also show bioluminescence, producing light for protection. These features make them an important example of colonial organization in cnidarians, which is a useful concept for NEET zoology preparation.
