A dog named Lilica has a special devotion and sense of duty to her family. She provides for her extended family by venturing two miles away each night to pick up food specially prepared for her and the other animals in her family, so that they have food to eat.

This smart and loyal dog has been sharing her food with her family every night for three years.

Lilica lives in a junkyard in São Carlos, Brazil, alongside another dog, a cat, chickens, a mule, and the woman, Neile Vania Antonio, who rescued her after she was abandoned as a puppy.

Every night, Lilica has followed the same routine. At 9:30 each evening, she travels to the home of Professor Lucia Helena de Souza, who cares for dozens of stray animals herself. Lucia prepares food for Lilica and places it in a bag for her to carry home.

“I realized that she ate and then stared at what was in the bag,” Lucia explained. A neighbor suggested Lilica might want to take the rest with her. “Then we tied it up and took the bag and gave it to Lilica. From that day on we do it,” she said.

After eating a portion herself, Lilica gently carries the bag all the way back to the junkyard to share with the other animals waiting for her.

Neile says the devoted dog has never stopped thinking of others. “People don’t do that. Some people hide and do not want to share what they have with others,” she said. “She did not. Lilica is an exceptional animal.”
