Why should you wait for the alcohol to dry before drawing blood?
It may seem like a simple step BUT
An alcohol swab, a needle, a blood draw, and it's over.
But in reality, these few seconds can be the difference between an accurate result and a misleading one.
📌 Not waiting for the alcohol to dry may cause:
🔴 Hemolysis (erythrolysis)
Alcohol residues enter the bloodstream through the needle and damage the RBC membrane, resulting in:
✔False rise in potassium
✔High LDH and AST
✔Plasma discoloration to pink or red
🔴 Inaccurate laboratory results
This may lead to:
✔Reanalysis
✔Delayed diagnosis
✔Misinterpretation of the clinical condition
🔴 Pain and burning for the patient
This is an early clinical sign that the withdrawal took place before the alcohol dried.
📌 Why wait?
✔ Because alcohol needs time to function as a disinfectant
✔ Because dryness reduces the risk of residue entering the sample
✔ Because quality in the laboratory starts from the pre-analysis stage
⏱ Rule of thumb:
Wait 20–30 seconds for the alcohol to dry completely.
Do not touch or blow the puncture area after sterilization.
