मसूरी का इतिहास सन 1825 में कैप्टन यंग, एक साहसिक ब्रिटिश मिलिट्री अधिकारी और श्री.शोर, देहरादून के निवासी और अधीक्षक द्वारा वर्तमान मसूरी स्थल की खोज से आरम्भ होता है। तभी इस छुट्टी पर्यटन स्थल की नींव पड़ी, जिसके अभी तक भी कुछ ही विकल्प कहलाते हैं। 1827 में एक सैनिटोरियम बनवाया गया, लैंढ़ौर में, जो आज कैन्टोनमैन्ट बन चुका है।[1], कर्नल एवरेस्ट ने यहीं अपना घर बनाया 1832 में, और 1901 तक यहां की जनसंख्या 6461 थी, जो कि ग्रीष्म ऋतु में 15000 तक पहुंच जाती थी। पहले मसूरी सड़क द्वारा सहारनपुर से गम्य था, 58 कि.मि.दूर। सन 1900 में इसकी गम्यता सरल हो गयी यहां रेल के आने से, जिससे सड़क मार्ग छोटा होकर केवल 21 कि.मी. रह गया।}}.[2] इसके नाम के बारे में प्रायः लोग यहां बहुतायत में उगने वाले एक पौधे ”’मंसूर”’ को इसके नाम का कारण बताते हैं, जो लोग, अभी भी इसे मन्सूरी कहते हैं।

Mussoorie is known to hold a year full of cultural, spiritual and religious events, beginning with the popular Siddha Fair. This religious fair and gathering is held every Sunday. It holds the most importance on the last Sunday of April, which is when people from all over the region and country join to offer prayers. The sight is touching and educational, not to mention a large moment of pride for the people of Mussoorie. Kunjapuri Fair is another major fair, held every year in October during the celebrated Navrataras. Mussoorie’s style of events are always large and powerful, and Kunjapuri Fair is a prime example – over fifty thousand people arrive each year to both offer and purchase from the vibrant displays of local handicrafts and handmade items, all unique in their own splendour. The Surkhanda Devi Fair focuses on the religious side of festivities, as it is held on the precious Ganga Dussehra day at the renowned Surkhanda Devi temple. This fair is dedicated to the Goddess Durga, and serves as a highly involved pilgrimage center during worship of the Goddess. The main attraction is the holy ceremony, which then proceeds into celebrating through music and dance; and more beautiful handicrafts are put on display. The rich blend of culture and lifestyle welcomes a great opportunity to experience Mussoorie’s grand way of showing appreciation and excitement during these festivals.
