How Face Detection Works

Face detection is the process of finding a human face in an image or video using a camera and software.

Step-by-step process:

1️⃣ Camera captures an image

A camera takes a photo or video frame of a person.

2️⃣ Image is converted to data

The image is changed into pixels (numbers) so the system can analyze it.

3️⃣ Face features are searched

The software looks for common face patterns, such as:

Two eyes

Nose

Mouth

Face shape

4️⃣ Face detection algorithm works

Different methods are used, for example:

Haar Cascade – checks light & dark areas (eyes vs cheeks)

HOG (Histogram of Oriented Gradients) – detects face edges

AI / Deep Learning – learns faces using trained models (most modern systems)

5️⃣ Face location is identified

When a match is found, the system draws a box around the face.

6️⃣ Optional: Face recognition

If enabled, the detected face is compared with stored faces to:

Unlock phone

Mark attendance

Verify identity
