Mumbai’s 87-year-old Joshi Uncle sells hand-made bags for a mere Rs 40 to Rs 80. He buys pieces of cloths from sofa and curtain makers and stitches them into bags himself. He sits at Phadeke Road, Dombivli.

"If women were incapable of serving in the armed forces, they would not have made so much progress. “I have put in more than 17 years of service and there are so many others like me,” says Wing Commander Shaliza Dhami, the first woman officer of the Indian Air Force to become the Flight Commander of a flying unit.

Wing Commander Dhami, serving for 15 years now, has been flying choppers. She is also the the first woman flying instructor of IAF and is the first woman officer to get permanent commission of the flying branch.
