L. Kannan, an IIT-Madras graduate, the man responsible for the actual technology that has made Malkha’s small-scale, energy-saving approach possible, started off figuring why such a profitable sector was leaving its workers so destitute. “Most of the people are living at very abject levels, but it’s not as if the industry is obsolete,” he says. Starting in 2000, Kannan began to actually build a prototype of the machine that today transforms fresh, loose cotton into strands of soft twisted threads at a scale 100 times smaller than conventional spinning mills, allowing Uzramma’s vision to materialize: they’ve established factories with suites of three machines that keep the vertical chain intact and under the autonomy of the community. In terms of eco-sustainability, all of this requires only 5 HP (horsepower).

Industry experts recognize that integration is the way to profitable textile production. But the scale of conventional spinning makes this expensive and impractical. Micro-spinning enables integration on a small scale, without the inefficiencies of scale.
