Quantum Dots and it’s applications
September 12, 2024 / MITWS India / Edit
Quantum dots (QDs) are artificial ‘nanoscale particles, typically ranging in size from 1 to 100 nanometers’ that are made of semiconductor materials and have a size of a few nanometers. They are sometimes called “artificial atoms” because they behave like individual atoms with discrete energy levels. Quantum dots are nanoparticles made from semiconducting materials.
Properties of Quantum Dots:
Quantum Confinement Effects: Quantum dots demonstrate quantum confinement effects, where electrons and holes are confined within a limited volume. …
Semiconducting Properties: Quantum dots exhibit semiconducting behavior due to their small size.
Two general approaches for the preparation of QDs have been reported over the last decade: (1) formation of nanosized semiconductor particles through colloidal chemistry and (2) epitaxial growth and/or nanoscale patterning.
The dots show quantum effects because they are so little. This means that electrons inside the dot are trapped and can only occupy defined energy levels. The 2023 Nobel Prize in Chemistry recognized the discovery and development of quantum dots (QDs), engineered core/shell semiconductor nanoparticles with precisely designed and tailor-made particle architectures and surface chemistries, that are so tiny that their sizes determine their properties. The first quantum dots were synthesized in a glass matrix by Alexei A. Onushchenko and Alexey Ekimov in 1981 at the Vavilov State Optical Institute and independently in colloidal suspension by Louis E. The Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded 117 times to 225 Nobel Prize laureates between 1901 and 2023. John Bardeen is the only laureate who has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics twice, in 1956 and 1972. This means that a total of 224 individuals have received the Nobel Prize in Physics. Quantum dots are researched as contrast agents for diagnosis and detection, due to narrow emission spectra, high light stability, and wide and continuous absorption spectra. Additionally, the energy spectrum of these nanosystems can also be tailored by controlling the size, shape, and energy levels. The main advantage of using QDs is their high photo-stability, which is 100-1000 times higher than fluorescent dyes. They also possess longer fluorescence lifetime resulting in higher quantum yield
Quantum dots typically cost more than $2,000 per gram from commercial sources, and pricey solvents like octadecene, or ODE – the least expensive solvent used in quantum dot preparation today – account for about 90 percent costs of raw materials.
Quantum dots (QDs) are semiconductors-based nanomaterials with numerous biomedical applications such as drug delivery, live imaging, and medical diagnosis, in addition to other applications beyond medicine such as in solar cells. The high extinction coefficient of QDs offers extraordinary optical behaviors to make solid-state lighting, photo-detectors, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), display devices, fluorescent biological labeling, composites, and medical imaging.
The toxicity of quantum dots to cells is a major issue. The coating of quantum dots can be cytotoxic such as mercaptoacetic acid. A damaging effect on cells becomes visible at concentrations above ~6μM for mercaptoacetic acid and above 30μM for PEG-silica coated quantum dots
