Firstly, most firms and independent advisors lack model portfolios that point to their best ideas and the ideal proportions between different choices. This causes randomness in the portfolio construction, causing huge deviations in how your portfolios actually perform vi-a-vis their indicative best choices for clients similar to your risk appetite
Secondly, the largest ongoing contribution by an advisor is his interpretation of the markets and the timely adjustments he makes to your long term portfolio. This requires great skill and a no-conflict environment to operate in. From my experience of 18 years, I am yet to see any advisory firm transparently document their tactical asset allocation strategies that helps clients stay ahead of markets` major moves. Without their strategies and effective recommendations, clients are likely to suffer as much as general markets and they be better off going to fund managers directly. The third disconnect is the timeliness of the ex*****on of the advice received. We observed that there is a difference in clients` portfolios performance attributable to the size of their portfolios with an advisor. Our estimates indicate a 6 to 8% per annum under-performance, if an advisor takes about 7 to 10 days to cover all his clients and execute his best advice.
