Performance artists and former couple Marina Abramović and Ulay share their thoughts on the historic moment in MoMA when they met after many years of separation.

Marina Abramović (b. 1946) had a retrospective exhibition, The Artist is Present, at the Museum of Modern Art in New York back in 2010. During a performance, her former partner in art and life, Ulay (1943-2020), turned up, and the emotional meeting between the two became a viral sensation.

Marina Abramović and Ulay were interviewed in upstate New York over ten days in August 2018 for the film ‘No Predicted End.’

In March 2025, M.F. Husain’s Untitled (Gram Yatra) made #history by becoming the most expensive Indian #artwork ever sold at auction, fetching ₹119 crores (USD 13.75 million) at Christie’s. This 13-panel mural, painted in 1954, captures the energy and rhythm of rural Indian life and stands as a landmark in post-independence Indian #modernism. But what made this record even more remarkable was the journey the artwork had taken-hidden away from public view for many decades.

The mural was originally acquired in Delhi by Dr. Leon Elias Volodarsky, a Norwegian surgeon of Ukrainian origin, who was leading a WHO mission in India at the time. He purchased the work directly from Husain after it was exhibited at the All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society. After his death in 1964, the painting was gifted to Oslo University Hospital, where it remained in a private corridor, quietly preserved but unseen. From the heart of India to a hospital hallway in Norway, and now, to the global spotlight, Gram Yatra’s story is as extraordinary as the work itself.
