Dan David Prize
We recognize early- and mid-career scholars and practitioners whose work illuminates the human past. We award up to nine prizes of $300,000 each year to outstanding early-and-mid-career scholars and practitioners in the historical disciplines.

Kim Welch (2022) has been working on a creative book project. The Prize provided her with “space and time and resources to be ambitious and to think big".

Over the last 5 years, Dan David Prize winners have used the award to pursue creative approaches to research. 2023 winner Saheed Aderinto used the Prize to create "The Fuji Documentary", a film about the rich tradition of Yoruba Fuji music in Nigeria.

Congratulations to Giancarlo Marcone for winning the 2026 Dan David Prize.
Giancarlo is an archaeologist with a focus on Peru whose research analyzes human settlements and long-term occupation patterns. A proponent of participative heritage, his transformative approach to archaeology prioritizes the co-design and collaborative preservation of heritage sites with local stakeholders.
