Last week, at this yearโ€™s UVID Dronetech conference, something small on a poster meant something very big for me.

๐Ÿ•Ž Chanukah, the Sevivon, and the Physics of Helicopters Flight ๐Ÿš

This Chanukah, as we spin the Sevivon (spinning top), weโ€™re not just celebrating traditionโ€”weโ€™re witnessing physics in action! ๐Ÿ”„

The Sevivonโ€™s spin demonstrates angular momentum and gyroscopic stability, the same principles that keep helicopters flying. ๐Ÿš But thereโ€™s moreโ€”gyroscopic precession plays a key role too!

๐Ÿ’ก What is gyroscopic precession?
Gyroscopic precession occurs when a force is applied to a spinning object, causing a reaction 90 degrees later in the direction of rotation. This effect, seen in the Sevivon, is a property of rigid bodies like spinning tops or gyroscopes.

While this principle has an analogy to helicopter rotor dynamics, rotor blades experience a more complex behavior called phase lag, influenced by aerodynamics forces, blade flexibility rotorhead geometry and other factors. This concept is a key element in rotor head design, enabling precise control and stability during flight.

The Sevivon provides a simple and visual example of rotational motion principles, making it a great way to introduce the physics behind helicopter rotor dynamics! ๐Ÿ’ก
