Did you know that Jerusalem once had a small but powerful group of English-language poets who made the city their home?
Robert Friend, Shirley Kaufman, and Dennis Silk were among the first immigrants writing poetry in English in Jerusalem. Their voices — intimate, questioning, deeply human — capture the tension of belonging, language, and life in this city. Yet their work has been largely overlooked.
Poems as Invitations revives these poets by pairing their words with striking limited-edition screen prints by Jerusalem-based artists Sara Benninga and Meydad Eliyahu, produced at the Jerusalem Print Workshop.
The exhibition invites you to read, to look, to listen — and to rediscover a hidden strain of Jerusalem’s cultural history.
