Parsha Shelach - Don't let your self-esteem depend on what others think of you.
In this week's Torah reading of Parsha Shelach, Moses sent spies to the land of Canaan to report on the people and the land. Ten of the twelve spies defamed the land and convinced the Children of Israel that they would not be able to conquer the land, despite all of the miracles that they had personally experienced. In relaying their report, they showed their lack of self-esteem by saying that “we were like grasshoppers’ in the eyes of the populace. The moral lesson we learn from this is that our actions should be governed by the sincerity of our beliefs and not the opinions of others.
