An interesting article that makes really clear what the next major shift in computing will be: a big chunk of the industry (not just Apple) will move from Intel to ARM processors. Essentially, everything is ready for that move across the board, except for software.

That said, ARM processors in computers are old news. Even if one doesn't count smartphones as computers. There already exists a version of Windows 10 for ARM (since 2017). Linux on ARM is almost as old as the architecture itself. These markets are tiny right now. But that's likely to change when any major personal computing product built around ARM goes mainstream.

Apple, as compared to Microsoft, has a much tighter control over its ecosystem, and so will likely be able to make the transition much earlier. And once they do it, the rest of the industry will follow.
