SOLD A very impressive and large mid C19th plaster portrait bust by Irish sculptor John Lawlor, with beautiful original patinated bronze painted finish. The bust is signed and dated 1865, it is very possibly of the Irish Republican politician William Smith O’Brien, 1803 - 1864.
John Lawlor was born in Dublin in 1820, and after studying and working in Ireland, moved to London in 1845, where he died in 1901. He was noted for portait busts and poetic subjects, winning many high profile commissions in both London and Ireland throughout his career.
Although moving in London’s high society for much of his career, Lawlor held strong sympathies for Irish republicanism, and is recorded executing busts of Daniel O’Connell and others including Smith O’Brien. The date of this bust, being the year after O’Brien’s death, suggests it was done in memoriam. O’Brien is famously commemorated with a full length statue at the base of Dublin’s O’Connell Street.
At 26 inches high, this bust is larger than lifesize, and has a powerful presence. The portrait shows O’Brien as thoughtful and idealistic, with strong and handsome features. Some wear as per photos to the original bronzed finish, with some small grazes and chips, but no significant damage.

Had a lovely day out meandering around the roads of Carlow and South Wicklow today, such beautiful countryside at it’s finest this time of year. Visited Duckett’s Grove ruin in Carlow with its romantic gothic architecture, and the wonderful little Tullow museum, well worth a stop!
