Well done to Kayla O’Reilly and Kaitlin Shaw on their performances at the Ulster Track & Field Championships in Belfast’s Mary Peters Track on Sunday 7th June. The girls took home four gold and a silver medal between them.
Kaitlin took part in three throws events in the Under 15 age group. In the javelin, Kaitlin edged out her nearest contender to win gold by a narrow margin, throwing 26.01m, while in the shot putt, the margin was even tighter, with just four centimetres separating the top two. Kaitlin won the event with a best of 9.68m. Things were more clear cut in the discus where Kaitlin’s best of 26.22m put her well clear of the chasing pack and secured her a third gold medal from the day.
On the track, Kayla competed in the 100m and 400m events at U19 level, with both events being run together with the U20 age group. Kayla was second U19 in the 100m, her time of 13.16 seconds being enough to finish ahead of two of the U20 athletes. In the tough 400m race, Kayla had a very strong run to win the U19 event in a time of 60.76 seconds. She was third overall, hot on the heels of the two older runners from the U20 category and comfortably clear of the other athletes behind her.

All Ireland Indoor Track & Field, 28th March
Well done to our four athletes who took part in the All-Ireland Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday 28th March in Athlone.
First up on the day was Kaitlin Shaw in the Under 15 shot putt. Having qualified as a silver medallist at Ulster, she finished ahead of all the other Ulster qualifiers. Kaitlin's best throw of 9.58m put her in eighth place overall. In the U13 shot putt, Ulster champion Jackson Everett maintained his top Ulster spot with a best throw of 9.79m, leaving him in eighth place as well.
In the U13 girls 60m hurdles, Aoibhinn Farrelly was sixth in her heat in a new personal best time of 11.86 seconds, finishing ahead of one of the Ulster medallists that beat her at provincial level. And in the U14 girls, Íosa Lynch was fifth in her heat of the 60m hurdles. She was unlucky to hit a hurdle awkwardly and lost momentum, but still managed to finish the race in a time of 11.62 seconds, also beating one of the Ulster medal winners from the previous competition.
Well done to all for qualifying for nationals in the first place and for continuing to show improvements in their performances as we look forward to the outdoor season.
