This Long Eared Owlet (26-2735) was brought in from Co.Laois after been found on the ground beside their two deceased siblings. Fortunately, they were found in time and were quickly brought into care and stabilised. They are now receiving frequent feeding from volunteers with limited contact to avoid imprinting behaviours which young birds are prone to.
Imprinting happens when young animals are hand reared inappropriately and they come to identify with humans rather than their own species. This presents life long challenges for the bird, they are unable to recognise other birds as companions or mates and ultimately cannot return to the wild. Once a bird has imprinted it cannot be undone. To avoid this, and to offer comfort, the owlet is being fostered by a plush owl, and volunteers limit all contact to feeding and cleaning.
Once old enough, this owlet will be introduced to other young Long Eared owlets currently in care to continue their rehabilitation journey together.
