Back in February 2020 the TG4 design department were just beginning to get our teeth stuck into a TG4 rebrand in conjunction with Red Bee Media when a virus swept its way across the world and separated us off into our separate bubbles. In our separate bubbles some of us were working in kitchens, some of us in bedrooms, some of us babysitting numerous children while sweating it over a redesign.

Our hard work got recognised yesterday in television’s most prestigious promo and design awards (up against all of the titans with their million euro budgets) with a first place Promax Europe 2021 gold award. Delirah!!

Did you ever wonder how they recoloured those old black and white films?

“Elisabeth Thuillier was a French colorist who excelled at coloring facets of magic lanterns and other kinds of photographic work. Elisabeth and her workforce of 200 employees – all women – were often hired by French filmmaker George Melies to color his films. Some classics include A Trip to the Moon and The Kingdom of Fairies.

They began coloring film around 1897 in a coloring lab in Paris. The colorization method was initially hand done by individuals. Yes, the employees literally painted every object in every frame one color at a time. They formed an assembly line in which each colorist was assigned a single tone, filling particular parts of each frame before passing the film to the next employee. Some areas were so minute that the employees resorted to brushes with a single hair!”

The Fíbín play ‘House Party’ in Baile na hAbhann tomorrow will be brilliant if it’s anything like the last one, they made it in to the top 10 events in Ireland tomorrow night’s Culture Night (with some trippy visuals by Potion).
