Senator Mark Daly
Delighted to welcome the Deputy Head of Mission from the French Embassy to the Seanad today as we mark Bastille Day, France’s National Day.
Bastille Day commemorates the storming of the Bastille in 1789 and celebrates the enduring values of Liberty, Equality and Fraternity—ideals that have inspired democracies around the world.
France and Ireland share a unique historical connection. The French Tricolour inspired the design of the Irish national flag, which was presented to Thomas Francis Meagher in Paris in 1848. Meagher brought it to Ireland, where he first flew it on 7 March 1848 as a symbol of peace and unity between the Orange and Green traditions.
I want to extend my best wishes to all French nationals living in Ireland. May you enjoy a wonderful Bastille Day as we recognise the strong friendship and enduring relationship between Ireland and France.
