Seeking protection through the courts is not always straightforward.

The Safe Ireland One Day Census 2026 highlights the emotional and practical challenges survivors face when pursuing legal protection, from delays and costs to the stress of court proceedings and ongoing coercive control.

Specialist domestic violence services play a critical role supporting survivors with:
• Court accompaniment
• Legal information
• Advocacy and emotional support

But more must be done to ensure survivors are supported and that systems respond effectively to abuse.
