Some highlights from Saturday's in Dublin.
Pleased to finally get our short doc on Pope Francis' visit to Ireland online.
---------
When the last Pope, John Paul the 2nd visited in
1979, Ireland was a very different country; Mass
attendance was among the highest in the Catholic
World, homosexuality and abortion were illegal and
the Catholic Church had a disproportionate
influence over social life in Ireland.
39 years later, Ireland today has been rocked by
decades of Clerical Abuse Scandals and the true
extent of the politico-religious carceral state has
been revealed. The overwhelming votes towards
Marriage Equality and the Repeal the 8th
Amendment Referendums (both which the Church
opposed) have shown that Ireland has changed
drastically and the influence of the Church has
diminished greatly.
Shot in Dublin, Knock and Tuam this documentary
covers those celebrating Pope Francis' 2018 visit,
those protesting, and those still experiencing hurt
from the Catholic institutions in Ireland today.
