An accessory connects to the device to allow it to take iron readings. The app then displays the results while showing useful information to the user. The app is being developed by five MSc Creative Digital Media and BA Journalism students from Dublin Institute of Technology as part of a module in Media Entrepreneurship.

Iron is required for the production of red blood cells (a process known as haematopoiesis) but it's also part of haemoglobin (that is the pigment of the red blood cells) binding to the oxygen and thus facilitating its transport from the lungs via the arteries to all cells throughout the body
