EABA Summer School 2026 (Session 4)
Speaker: Dr Zoe Lucock
Abstract
Far from being a novel application of the science of behaviour analysis, behavioural gerontology is one of the oldest areas where behaviour analysis was expected to contribute to issues of social significance. In more recent years, there has been a focus within behavioural gerontology on working with older adults with major neurocognitive disorder, more commonly referred to as dementia. This webinar will introduce a behavioural approach to understanding ageing and age-related changes, share a conceptualisation of major neurocognitive disorder, and present examples of areas of work within behavioural gerontology such as reducing behavioural symptoms of dementia, maintaining skills and increasing engagement. Furthermore, the application of behaviour analysis to supporting middle-aged adults with Down syndrome who are at increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease will be discussed, including practical suggestions for how clinicians working with this population should adapt their practice.
