𝙎𝙤 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙙𝙞𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙖 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢?
The idea first arose in the early 20th century as various labour unions in the United States started to push back against the backbreaking 12–14 hour workdays that many manufacturers required from their employees.

By 1938, President Franklin Roosevelt signed the Fair Labour Standards Act, standardising the number of hours worked each day, along with 40 hours per week, and requiring overtime pay for hours beyond that. That’s where “9-5” originates and has been embraced almost worldwide.

However, people finally started to realise that this rigidity regarding the workday isn’t always helpful or 𝓹𝓻𝓸𝓭𝓾𝓬𝓽𝓲𝓿𝓮! Nor is there a 'one-size-fits-all' methodology.
