In September 2010, the Couchsurfing community in Dublin started a weekly Language Exchange meeting at the Pembroke Pub on Lower Baggot Street. These meetings were moved to the Longstone Pub on Townsend Street later on. The group also created a page for its members, allowing not only Couchsurfers but anyone else interested in languages to join. This page (the one you're on now) is still be
ing used today to promote the current events. The meetings were abandoned in early 2011 but were re-initiated by other Couchsurfing members later that year, who moved the meetings from the Longstone to MacTurcaills next door, where they have been organized ever since. In December 2011 a new Facebook group was created (https://www.facebook.com/groups/dublinlanguageexchange/) which significantly increased the group's popularity. Member numbers grew from 0 to 100 in just a couple of months and reached over 800 as of August 2013, which made the group the biggest of its kind in Dublin. By mid September 2014 this number had more than tripled, with 3000 members in the group now. In June 2013 the group organized its first International Pub Quiz for charity, and followed up in 2014 with a second one as well as new events like the Language Speed Dating on Wednesdays, pub crawls and various other events throughout the year. Lastly, in 2014 also a a Newsletter and a Twitter account (https://twitter.com/DublinLanguageX) were created.
2015 saw a new weekly German meetup added to the calendar on Saturdays and all weekly events were centralized in the Czech Inn, adding also a Comedy Improvisation Night to the meeting on Tuesday. In January the group welcomed its 4000th member! SHARED EVENTS:
Language Speed Dating: one-on-one conversations with native speakers, includes free food and also a discount if you keep coming. Every Wednesday at the Czech Inn. http://www.meetup.com/Dublin-Language-Exchange/
