Congratulations to Deirdre Kelly, winner of this year’s Sarah Cecilia Harrison Essay Prize. Deirdre was recognised at an evening event here recently for her wonderful essay, Kathleen Fox: Chronicler of Irish History, which aims to give wider recognition to this remarkable artist and her fascinating personal life.

Deirdre Kelly is an independent art historian and Library Assistant with Limerick City and County Public Library Service, who came to learn more about the artist through Fox’s granddaughter as she was completing her Masters dissertation in 2009. Through her essay, Deirdre has given an overview of Fox’s life before, during and after the 1916 Rising and the pivotal moment of creating the painting The Arrest of Countess Markievicz.
