Gig Review: Emergence Acoustic

It's been almost a year since Crojayn first introduced Emergence, a gig platform for up-and-coming musicians. This weekend saw Emergence go acoustic for the first time in the Half Door Café, where a handful of extremely talented singers took to the stage with their guitars.

Kicking off the gig was GroundFloor's own Sean Barrett, who performed a variety of covers with a singer-songwriter style tweak. A whole host of artists were covered, from Outkast to Beyoncé to The Coronas. What's always stood out to me about Sean's sets though is his take on Bring Me The Horizon's "Sleepwalking". I've seen many people try and fail at making this song suitable for acoustic performance without the use of screamo vocals (it's one of my favourite songs, believe me I've looked). Sean never fails to impress during a set, and this was no exception.

Next on the bill was Beth O'Reilly, who played a selection of originals (many taken from her "See You In November" EP) and two covers. Beth is certainly an extremely talented songwriter with a knack for clever and feisty lyrics. The standout moment from her set had to be her original song "Vignette". Most of the audience sang along with great enthusiasm, knowing the track word-for-word. And to think this was Beth's first gig! Amazing altogether.

The third act of the night was Andy Killian, playing some originals and covers (as well as dropping several Wonderwall jokes). He started his set off with some distorted guitar (speaking as a person who loves guitar distortion, this was the perfect way to begin). The standouts for me were "Lost Fights" (an original) and his cover of David Bowie's "The Man Who Sold The World". Pretty difficult to believe this guy was feeling unwell right before his set. Absolutely class!

The one and only Matt Corrigan (known by many as the legendary GhostKing) made a surprise appearance. He started off with some Queens Of The Stone Age, playing a cover of "Make It With You" (for which he searched desperately for a duet partner and failed in doing so). Now, a Matt Corrigan set wouldn't be a Matt Corrigan set without the tradition of reciting some Yeats. Yes, this Emergence saw Matt recite "When You Are Old" once again to an adoring and plentiful crowd. Despite a few mic stand difficulties, Matt delivered an amazing set as usual. And his many adoring spectators thought so too.

The night ended with a song from Crojayn frontman Jordan Morrison. He performed a new Crojayn track, "For A While", solo. My first impression of this song: undeniably brilliant. Jordan definitely knows his way with lyrics. If the song sounded this good now, I can't wait to hear how it turns out with Cian, Dave and Dylan on it. The audience was certainly captivated by it. Fair play Jordan!

Overall, an amazing gig with some extremely talented people. Props to Crojayn and Matt Corrigan for putting this whole thing together every time. You guys are a credit to the Cork music scene.
