It's something most people don't realise is an option. We'll be covering it in full at our free webinar on 26th May.

Cohabiting in Ireland? You may have more risks than you think.

With over 150,000 cohabiting couples nationwide, many assume their financial and legal
position mirrors that of married couples. In reality, the gap remains significant β€” even in
2026.

While recent changes have extended certain pension rights to qualified cohabitants, key
challenges still exist:
β€’ No automatic inheritance rights without a will
β€’ A €20,000 lifetime tax-free threshold between partners (with 33% tax beyond that)
β€’ No ability to share income tax credits or reliefs
β€’ Limited property protections compared to married couples
β€’ Potential exposure to delays and taxes if protection policies are not structured correctly
The good news? With the right planning, many of these risks can be managed.

Strategies such as properly structured life cover, making full use of tax exemptions, and
ensuring you have a valid will in place can make a significant difference to your financial
security.

Cohabiting couples need to be proactive β€” not reactive.
If you’re unsure where you stand or want to ensure you and your partner are fully protected,
now is the time to act.

Contact Fortis Financial today to arrange a consultation and take control of your financial
future.
