New Era for Wheel Sense

You may or may not be aware of the story behind Wheel Sense Bike Store. In 2014, the Wheel Sense Company was set up with the view to the rising demand for an expertise in biking technologies for both the leisure cyclist and the competitor in road and off-road biking.

With over 25 years’ experience in competitive bike racing and maintenance, our expert team, Jonathan and John Malone set up the Wheel Sense Brand offering their expertise to all cycling enthusiasts covering Arklow and the wider South-East region.

Wheel Sense had two business fronts. Jonathan applied his expertise in the sales maintenance and store service business and John set up the Wheel Sense Education Programme. This involved taking it into schools, clubs and the wider community. The programme included bike handling skills, road safety, and maintenance for both road and off-road cycling.

The business delivered quality bikes, accessories and maintenance. This required the expert knowledge of bike fitting with mechanical and hydraulic disc braking systems. Wheel Sense became a leader in the field supplying the Lapierre, Forme, GT, Scott, Raleigh and the high-end Yeti Brands, which is one of the renowned World Endura Competition Bikes.

Wheel Sense suffered an irreparable loss with the death of Jonathan in February 2017. Jonathan was a manufacturing technology engineer by profession. But more importantly, he was a wonderful family man, a loving father, son, brother and friend to many. His loss was through the medium of an unknown rare cancer, Sarcoma, which ironically surfaced from an impact injury suffered while out mountain biking doing the sport that he so loved and excelled in. Jonathan bravely battled his illness over a three-and-a-half-year period, but he sadly succumbed to it on the 1st of February 2017.

The Wheel Sense Bike Store continued in Jonathan’s memory for a further two years. Alas, it is with regret that I announce that Wheel Sense Bike Store in Arklow will cease trading from the end of this year 2019.

The good news is that the Wheel Sense Brand will live on in memory of Jonathan with the new innovation project which will specialise in Biking Technologies for children who have difficulties in balance and motor development. The brand’s future looks very promising as we go forward into a new chapter catering for children and adults who might never have had the chance to enjoy the benefits and pleasure that cycling has to offer.

I would like to thank all the loyal customers and friends who have supported the Wheel Sense brand over the past five years. Keep enjoying the pleasure that cycling brings and thanks once again for all the support.
