Mount Sibayak is one of the volcanoes located in North Sumatra Province, Indonesia, precisely in Karo Regency. This mountain has a height of about 2,172 meters above sea level and is one of the active volcanoes that is popular among climbers and tourists who visit the area.
Geological History
Geologically, Mount Sibayak is a strato volcano formed by volcanic activity. Volcanic activity in this area has occurred since thousands of years ago, with small eruptions that occur periodically. Sibayak is located in an area also known as the “Sumatran Volcanic Zone”, which has many active volcanoes, including Mount Sinabung which is located not far from Sibayak.
Volcanic Activity
Mount Sibayak last erupted in 1881, although since then its volcanic activity has tended to be in the form of geysers or fumaroles that emit hot steam and sulfur gas. In the past, the eruptions of this mountain were quite large and caused damage, but currently, this mountain is better known for its relatively calm volcanic activity even though there is still the potential for eruptions.
