May Day adalah Hari Buruh Dunia tapi juga standar kode atau panggilan untuk kondisi darurat – misalnya antar pelaut atau awak pesawat… Tahun ini yang rasanya tepat adalah memperingati makna ganda May Day: mengapresiasi buruh dan pekerja, dan sekaligus mengakui darurat lapangan kerja dan hantaman keras terhadap daya beli pekerja kita… Untuk Indonesia, solusinya tidak berubah sejak 3 tahun lalu: harus ada pergeseran kebijakan dari yang mengutamakan mega-proyek yang padat modal, ke program dan kebijakan yang fokus ke sektor yang padat karya. Namun sekarang ada tantangan baru, yaitu perlu pergeseran kebijakan dari program yang populis-konsumtif, ke program yang langsung meningkatkan produktivitas pekerja formal dan non-formal kita dalam jangka pendek…

May Day is international Labor Day, but also a universal call-sign to signal an emergency situation – like between maritime or aviation personnel… This year, what feels appropriate is to commemorate the dual meaning of May Day: appreciating our workers and also acknowledging the jobs-emergency and the dramatic hit to our workers’ purchasing power… For Indonesia, the solution hasn’t changed since 3 years ago: there needs to be a shift away from policies that favor capital-intensive mega-projects, towards policies that favor labor-intensive sectors. But now we have an added challenge, namely to shift away from populist-consumptive programs, towards programs that quickly raise our worker productivity (both formal and informal workers) in the immediate short term…

Kemarin malam di UNDIP Semarang, saya merayakan Hari Pahlawan dengan beberapa ratus teman-teman dari berbagai kalangan dan berbagai generasi, termasuk mahasiswa dan pekerja muda… Dalam rangka semangat kepahlawanan, dalam diskusi kemarin saya himbau kita semua untuk masing² menjadi pahlawan di lingkungannya masing² – dengan langkah besar maupun kecil… Karena itu yg akan kita perlukan untuk 1, 2, 3 tahun ke depan: memberanikan diri untuk bicara apa adanya; berani untuk merubah diri dan menghadirkan perubahan yg sulit tapi niscaya; berani ambil risiko dengan merintis usaha² baru dan cara² baru yg di luar konsensus…

Yesterday evening at UNDIP Semarang, I celebrated National Heroes Day with a few hundred friends from all sorts of backgrounds and from different generations, including students and young workers… In the spirit of heroism, in yesterday’s discussion I urged all of us to become the heroes in each of our spheres of life – with actions large and small… Because that’s what we will need for the next 1, 2 or 3 years: the courage to speak the truth; the courage to change ourselves and to bring the changes that are difficult but unavoidable; the courage to take risks like pioneering new ventures and new ways of doing things that are outside consensus…
