On 6 July 2026, H.E. Dr. Chem Widhya, Secretary-General of AIPA, paid a courtesy call on H.E. Mr. Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri, Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to Indonesia, Timor-Leste and ASEAN. The meeting reaffirmed the shared commitment to strengthening meaningful relations between ASEAN, AIPA, and Pakistan.

Both sides highlighted the importance of a rules-based international order, regional solidarity, and dialogue in preserving peace, while reinforcing parliamentary diplomacy and cooperation amid an increasingly complex global landscape. They also emphasised the principles of people-centred and people-oriented, and exchanged views on key issues, including climate change, energy security, food security, ageing populations, and the participation of women and youth. The meeting also provided an opportunity to share updates on AIPA’s meetings and activities.

The National Assembly of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan has been granted Observer Status by AIPA in 2021. AIPA continues to place importance to fostering sustained engagement with its Observer Parliaments.

On 3 July 2026, H.E. Dr. Chem Widhya, Secretary-General of AIPA, attended the 2nd Regional Forum on the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC) Strategic Plan: “Mainstreaming the Strategic Plan into Regional, National, and Local Development Plans”, held at the ASEAN Headquarters in Jakarta, Indonesia.

H.E. Dr. Chem Widhya participated as a panellist in the Agenda 9: Mainstreaming Framework for the ASCC Strategic Plan, highlighting the role of parliaments in translating ASEAN commitments into national legislation, policies, and development plans. He underscored the importance of national ownership, institutional coordination, cooperation, accountability, trust and people-centred participation in ensuring the effective implementation of the ASCC Strategic Plan and the realization of the ASEAN Community Vision 2045.

In collaboration with Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta (UMY), the 26th AIPA Roadshow took place on 29 June 2026, marking the first-ever AIPA Roadshow in Yogyakarta.

Under the theme “Parliamentary Diplomacy and Youth Leadership in ASEAN,” the programme brought together the Secretary-General of AIPA, academics, and students to explore the role of parliamentary diplomacy in advancing regional cooperation and empowering young people to contribute to ASEAN’s future. Participants were also introduced to Model AIPA, educational simulation programme that provides youth with a hands-on understanding of ASEAN parliamentary diplomacy.
