the 10 kayaks no longer in sight — a reminder of how temporary some privileges can be. Still, that hasn’t stopped us from paddling.
Though paddling remains a rare sight on this lake—and sometimes earns curious looks—we believe in its quiet power. As a non-extractive way of engaging with nature, it lets us feel the lake's beauty and fragility without taking anything away. Close enough to care, yet mindful of the risks, we continue.
From 2024 to early 2025, things felt bleak. But with limited means and collective effort (yes, there was blood, sweat, tears, and even a mild electrocution), we built a wooden boat from scratch. And when we saw the children of the lake joining cleanup efforts with joy and pride, we knew it was worth it.
This isn’t just about boats. It’s about giving the next generation a reason to stay close to the water — to protect it, to play in it, to find themselves in it. Situgede is the only lake in Bogor City’s administrative area. It’s also a place often overlooked, too easily written off. But when children paddle instead of drift, when they clean instead of escape — we see hope.
In a time of change and quiet displacement, this is our way of holding ground — gently, with paddles and boats.
