The comet consists of three main components: a dense, solid core, a gas of sublimated material surrounding the core and a tail.
While the core of the comet is usually 1-10 km in diameter (0.6-6 miles), the tail is much larger. The tail of the famous Ikeya-Seki comet was roughly 50 000 000 km (31 000 000 miles) long.
This means that, if the core was the size of a dust grain, the tail would be roughly 1 km (0.6 miles) long! 🤯
