A Day of Mobility, Dignity, and Hope in San Juan La Laguna

Nestled on the shores of beautiful Lake Atitlán, the magical community of San Juan La Laguna became the setting for a remarkable day of service, compassion, and gratitude.

Thanks to the incredible support of Hands of Hope Northwest, the dedicated collaboration of the Municipalidad de San Juan La Laguna, and the tireless coordination of our board member, Leticia Mendoza, dozens of elderly residents and people with disabilities received life-changing mobility aids, including wheelchairs, crutches, walkers, canes, and adult diapers.

For many of these abuelitos and abuelitas, this day represented the end of a long wait. Some had spent years struggling with limited mobility, depending on family members or simply remaining confined to their homes. Yet through the power of teamwork and generosity, they received something every human being deserves: mobility, independence, and dignity.

Leticia, who lives in San Juan La Laguna and knows the community intimately, worked tirelessly to identify those most in need. Her deep connection to the people and her commitment to service helped ensure that every donation reached deserving hands and hearts.

Throughout the day, smiles, tears, hugs, and prayers filled the air. As we fitted wheelchairs, adjusted walkers, and handed out canes and crutches, we witnessed something extraordinary. While we arrived prepared to give, once again we discovered that we received far more than we could ever offer.

The blessings and prayers from the elders touched every volunteer. Their words of gratitude reminded us that true service is not measured by what we distribute, but by the connections we build and the hope we share. Their resilience, faith, and appreciation became a gift to all of us.

This experience reaffirmed an important lesson: when organizations, local governments, volunteers, and communities work together for a common purpose, incredible things happen. The power of collaboration can transform lives and strengthen entire communities.

We are honored to host the Hands of Hope Northwest team for the rest of the week as they experience the rich culture, traditions, and hospitality of Guatemala. It is our opportunity to express our gratitude for their continued friendship and unwavering support of our mission.

To our partners, volunteers, donors, and friends: thank you for allowing us to serve those most in need together. Every wheelchair, every walker, every cane, and every act of kindness helps create a more inclusive and compassionate world.

The journey continues, and there is much more to come.

ASOPEDI, The Daniele Agostino Derossi Foundation, Tano, Jann, and everyone who makes this mission of love in Aguacatán possible. This partnership makes it possible for the 2026 outreach campaign to reach those little angels in rural areas and, in many cases, in remote areas of Los Cuchumatanes. This outreach fills us with joy and reminds us how important it is to go out and reach them. In memory of our beloved Tano, an example to follow.
