Part of a series of mod-pop advertisement paper dresses, Poster Dress reflects the experimental spirit of the late 1960s, when fashion, graphic design, and popular culture merged into wearable images. The dress originally came with the statement:
“Should you tire of it, just cut open all the seams and hang it on your wall as a mammoth poster.” Bob Dylan Poster Dress is also part of the MoMA collection.

A detail that inspired Robine-Langlois’ research is Dylan’s iconic sunglasses. Introduced into his style around 1965, the thick, tapered frames coincided with his controversial electric turn and projected a more elusive, tougher image, often paired with all-black outfits influenced by existentialism and the visual culture surrounding the Black Panthers’ impact on American intellectual life, as noted by journalist Tom Wolfe.
