Pope Francis, the beloved leader of the Catholic Church, died at 88, the Vatican confirmed. The pontiff, who became pope in 2013 following Benedict XVI’s resignation, passed away at 7:35 AM, as announced by Cardinal Kevin Farrell. His death comes after a 38-day hospitalization earlier this year, though he appeared resilient, greeting crowds in St. Peter’s Square on Easter Sunday.

Francis, known for his humility and advocacy for the marginalized, dedicated his life to serving the Church and spreading Gospel values. “He taught us to live with fidelity, courage, and universal love,” Cardinal Farrell said, praising his commitment to the poor and vulnerable. The Vatican expressed gratitude for his legacy as a true disciple of Jesus.

The process to select a new pope, known as the conclave, is expected to begin within 15 to 20 days. The Catholic world mourns the loss of a pontiff who championed compassion and inclusivity, leaving an indelible mark on the Church.
