Join us for the opening of chapter 3 of the exhibition Discontinuity as Chronicle with the title Alpha-Delta: Undisclosed Case Study, revisiting the archive of Athens’ unfinished buildings and positioning them as signifiers of a specific time period of the city which is coming to an end.

An archive has as an integral part the quality of collection, the act of research, the process of categorization, compilation and reorganization. It establishes the relationship with time, through references to political periods, local and international governments and cultural currents. An archive negotiates but also represents or reconstructs the references. For us, the archive confronts concealment, projecting resistance to corruption of memory, striving to find the intermediate relationship between genealogies and the deconstruction of history.

The central object of study in the [UN]FINISHED project is the unfinished skeleton of a modern cultural phenomenon that continues to shape Greek modern life to an exceptional degree: the polykatoikia apartment building. An essential part of the work is the index of the 148 unfinished concrete skeletons found in the 7 districts of the municipality of Athens during Lalou and Aymo-Boot’s research. The installation Alpha-Delta: Undisclosed Case Study translates the index into a tangible form, displaying the building permissions obtained through more than hundred visits to the archive of the Athens Urban Planning Department. The people and events hiding under the dry information about year of permission, function and ownership forms the basis for the [UN]FINISHED investigation. In a moment of time where the current investment bubble is completing many of the city’s neglected corners and the unfinished as a phenomenon is gradually dissolving, a parallel archive of the skeletons presents itself as souvenirs of a ghost city of concealed memories of unrealised dreams.
