“Dark vessels”: boats that “disappear” from the map 🚢🌊
When a vessel travels without an active tracking signal (AIS/VMS)—or deliberately switches it off—it becomes much harder to monitor its route and verify where and when it’s fishing. This increases the risk of illegal activity, such as unreported catches and at-sea transshipments.

Ghost gear & illegal fishing: the nets left behind 🕸️🌊
When fishers “cut and run” to avoid inspections, lost or abandoned gear can keep trapping marine life for years. Globally, an estimated ~640,000 tonnes of fishing gear enters the ocean each year, and ghost gear may make up at least ~10% of marine litter.
In the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, research found ≥46% of the mass was fishing nets.
