When a vessel travels without an active tracking signal (AIS/VMS)โ€”or deliberately switches it offโ€”it becomes much harder to monitor its route and verify where and when itโ€™s fishing. This increases the risk of illegal activity, such as unreported catches and at-sea transshipments.

Ghost gear & illegal fishing: the nets left behind ๐Ÿ•ธ๏ธ๐ŸŒŠ

When fishers โ€œcut and runโ€ to avoid inspections, lost or abandoned gear can keep trapping marine life for years. Globally, an estimated ~640,000 tonnes of fishing gear enters the ocean each year, and ghost gear may make up at least ~10% of marine litter.

In the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, research found โ‰ฅ46% of the mass was fishing nets.
