Ghost gear & illegal fishing: the nets left behind ๐ธ๏ธ๐
When fishers โcut and runโ to avoid inspections, lost or abandoned gear can keep trapping marine life for years. Globally, an estimated ~640,000 tonnes of fishing gear enters the ocean each year, and ghost gear may make up at least ~10% of marine litter.
In the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, research found โฅ46% of the mass was fishing nets.
