China has committed US$1.5 million (over D110 million) to help The Gambia boost production of rice and millet as part of a new two-year agricultural programme.
The initiative, announced by the Chinese Ambassador to The Gambia, Liu Jin, will deploy eight Chinese agricultural experts to Sapu in the Central River Region, where they will work directly with farmers to improve irrigation, mechanisation, seed systems and post-harvest processing.
The support builds on China’s wider investment in the sector, including a US$6 million agricultural technology project in Sapu and Jamjamjelly, aimed at increasing local food production and reducing The Gambia’s heavy reliance on imported rice.
