The Jigokudani Monkey Park in Nagano Prefecture, Japan, will introduce a daily visitor cap and an online booking system starting in August. The park, famous for wild Japanese macaques that bathe in hot volcanic springs, has recently seen daily crowds surge to between 3,000 and 4,000 people. Park officials reported that this overcrowding has led to long ticket queues and instances of inappropriate tourist behavior, including attempts to feed, touch, and even bathe with the wild monkeys.
To manage the crowds and protect the animals, the new system will restrict attendance to a maximum of 2,000 visitors per day. This local measure reflects a broader struggle with overtourism across Japan, which welcomed a record 42.7 million tourists in 2025 and has faced similar challenges in popular destinations like Kyoto and Mount Fuji.
